Brokenness

In times of change and in times of transition there in lies a moment of brokenness. It is an ever so difficult task and monumental obstacle for our humanity to overcome at certain times. The winds of change often coincide with struggle and a necessity for one to let go of what is essentially our own comfort. But in this brokenness there lies a great potential that is unseen. And within this brokenness there is a greater prize that is often unclaimed.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Institution of the Lord's Supper

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with youin my Father's kingdom.”

Brokenness can be a blessing in disguise as seen in scripture. The above passages in the Gospel of Matthew gives us a glimpse into what brokenness can become. We are reluctant to let go of what we desire and that short-sightedness is what prevents us from seeing the eternal blessings that can follow when one places what little they have into the hands of God. Bread is valuable and needed, but why feed one when you can feed five thousand? Just some food for thought. Don't let your reluctance to let go of what little you have prevent you from experiencing the multiplying grace of our God. My prayer for us all.
