As we prepare for the new year and look back on the year that was, our memories probably consist of a mixed bag of the highs and lows throughout the 365 days that was 2019. Every year in ministry I have grown as an avid reader of both the Bible and books. I have found reading to be relaxing, engaging, provoking and resourceful in so many ways that it has enriched both myself and my ministry. I hope to continue my tenacity in reading in 2020. Although I cannot claim to be an expert on literature nor boast of any quality in my understanding of what I read. I can certainly recommend some of the best books I read this past year, so here are the top five books that I read in 2019 in no particular order:
1. Worship, Community and the Triune God of Grace by James. B. Torrance.
This book is all about worship and how much of worship we have misunderstood and continue to misunderstand in contemporary liturgical gatherings. I was challenged so much to rethink how I viewed worship and how I had so omitted a Trinitarian understanding of worship in liturgy. This has influenced almost every area of worship in my own life and my approach to church worship as well.
2. God, Marriage, and Family by Andreas Kostenberger
A wonderfully written book on the ever so popular topic of marriage and family. As I look forward to my own marriage and approach closer to the time when I will be a father, I decided to read this book as it was recommended tremendously by many pastors I respect. It was a fantastic read, as it deeply rooted its arguments on the authority of scripture and gave concise statements that were easy to grasp but deeper than expected. This book is a must read for every Christian seeking to have a truer understanding of biblical marriage and family.
3. The Courage to Teach by Parker J. Palmer
This book single-handedly reshaped and reformed my approach to teaching in any and every context. This is a must read for anyone who teaches anything at all. It is not explicitly a Christian book, but the author is a believer and clearly alludes to values of the faith. The book's conclusions are not so elaborate or climactic but the first half of this book left me in awe. I personally want every person in my church in a teaching position to read this book.
4. The Gospel-Driven Church by Jared Wilson
A fantastic read, and an easy one at that, that divulges on church ministry and the importance of being "Gospel-driven." I guess the suggestion is being made that some churches are driven by other things but the important point that is addressed here is the need to centralize and focus church ministry around the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. A great reminder and refreshing read for the modern church goer/leader.
5. The Cross of Christ by John Stott
I read this book once every year because it is just that good. This is a classic read and a must read book for any Christian in their lifetime. I never cease to be amazed and be so encouraged under the ministry of this book. It speaks so powerfully the need as sinners to reflect and depend on our faith in the cross of Christ. A message that I need, even in ministry, to continue to persevere in my walk and faith. Classic book.
So what are some of the best books you read this year? I'd love to know them. I hope your 2020 is full of great books that assist you in your walk with the Lord. Happy New Year and God bless you all!
